Overview

The Controls Engineer I is responsible for the setup of building automation control systems including provide technical support for the Project Manager to support the execution of controls design, controls installation, retro-commissioning, metering solutions, and data analytics.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Retro-Commissioning
    • Completes site surveys to determine existing facility conditions.
    • Conducts meetings with owners, clients, and sub-contractors as required.
    • Prepares meeting notes and site observation reports.
    • Completes energy calculations to estimate project savings.
    • Develops and implements programming modifications for the building automation Controls.
    • Completes minimum airflow calculations per the applicable code. (ASHRAE 170, 62.1, or other state/local codes.)
    • Completes project closeout documentations.
  • Design and Pre-Construction
    • Supports site surveys to determine the requirements to complete the scope of work.
    • Completes design documents, including drawings and specifications, for building automation controls upgrades.
    • Reviews submittals for conformation to design documents.
  • Construction
    • Prepares programming instructions for controls specialists, controls analysts, or sub-contractors.
    • Completes site visits to review progress, quality of installation, and identify deficiencies.
    • Troubleshoots controls programming and setup problems.
    • Provides programming support to the implementation team to complete the project requirements.
  • Other
    • Upholds Bernhard's owner advocacy philosophy, mission, and core values.
    • Performs the assigned duties with minimal supervision, while working in a team problem-solving environment.
    • Completes technical reports or related documents as required.

This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and reports to the Senior Logic Director.

Qualifications

Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in an Engineering Field
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented and willing to tackle various ongoing projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Versed in the industry and the Company's competitors
  • Ability to multitask and perform duties outside of the scope of work when necessary

Preferred Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • Building Automation Controls programming experience
  • Preferred Controls include Siemens, JCI, Honeywell, Trane, Struxureware, and Tridium
  • Building automation Controls design experience
  • Healthcare or Higher Education project experience
  • Proficient in AutoCAD (ACAD)
  • CEM certification

Travel Requirements

  • 50% of time will be spent traveling to job site(s)/office location

Physical/Work Environment Requirements

  • The work environment will be a combination of an office environment and site survey environment
  • Site surveys will include exposure to external weather, loud noises, and poorly accessible spaces
  • Ability to survey confined spaces within a facility to gather necessary information on building equipment
  • The use of ladders to survey equipment above ceiling is required periodically
